Leiweke’s experience developing sports facilities dates to Target Center, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ arena, which opened in 1990, two years after he took a job as vice president with the NBA expansion team. During his 12 years at AEG, the company privately built Staples Center and Home Depot Center (now StubHub Center), and invested in multiple arena projects outside of Los Angeles. Leiweke spent two years in Toronto, where he oversaw upgrades to Air Canada Centre and BMO Field, and now his new firm is consulting with British soccer royalty David Beckham to develop an MLS stadium in South Florida. Separately, Oak View Group, in addition to the booking deals it’s signing with arenas and stadiums, is engaged with the New York Islanders to improve the fan experience at Barclays Center and is forming a security and terrorism consulting firm specifically for facilities and entertainment districts.
