Jessey departing Fuel Sports to open charity event planning firm

Veteran motorsports agent David Jessey is leaving Fuel Sports Management Group after five years to revive his old company that will focus on running large-scale athlete charity events and brokering sponsorships.

JESSEY
Jessey will operate the company out of Charlotte under the + Jessey Sports moniker and run charity events in conjunction with Charleston, S.C.-based Empire Sports Management, which has an office at the Bulls Bay Golf Club, where Jessey will also be based.

Jessey, who previously held roles at companies including Richard Petty Motorsports, Bank of America and Raycom Sports, said he’s leaving Fuel because of how successful others have been in the boutique agency space.

“There is a new deal in the sports marketing world: You can venture out on your own, but not be on your own,” he said. “I am doing my own thing under the + Jessey Sports business name, but really I am going to continue doing what I am passionate about — big-time charity events and strategic partnerships.”

Plans for the company include creating two new charity events with goals of raising more than $1 million each, finding opportunities to sell for properties, and bringing potential sponsors to the motorsports space.

Jessey, who will work in a consulting role to title sponsors of the charity events, also spent two years with Virginia Sports Properties and said he could look to do work with that entity as well.

“At Fuel, I had the opportunity to work on developing charity platforms for our guys,” Jessey said. “Over the past year, it became evident that the best part of my job was chasing down money for the charity. There is an exciting niche that I want to participate in.”

Jessey was a founding partner and executive vice president of Fuel, which represents a slate of NASCAR drivers, including Denny Hamlin, Kasey Kahne and Jamie McMurray. The agency is headed by Rod Moskowitz.
