New club space gets family name

The new club area in the south end zone of Jack Trice Stadium will be named the Sukup End Zone Club, after the Sukup family of Sheffield, Iowa, and pending final approval from the Iowa State University board of regents. The club will be a two-level premium seating area with a capacity of 3,000.

CHARLOTTE
Circle K naming Speed Street

Circle K agreed to a one-year deal to be the new event sponsor for next month’s Speed Street festival in Charlotte. The Circle K and Kangaroo Speed Street presented by Coca-Cola is free and takes place May 21-23, between races at Charlotte Motor Speedway — the May 16 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and the May 24 Coca-Cola 600.

CLEVELAND
Local lineman gets bobbled
A local lineman for FirstEnergy was featured on limited-edition bobbleheads given away at a recent Cleveland Cavaliers game at Quicken Loans Arena. Evan Suboticky of Barberton, Ohio, was the Ohio Edison employee selected by FirstEnergy to serve as a model for the bobblehead. Everyone in attendance received a bobblehead of player Kevin Love, and 50 people received the bobblehead modeled after Suboticky.

Crew signs nutrition provider

Columbus Crew SC agreed to a partnership with Abbott’s EAS Sports Nutrition that will see the brand become the official sports nutrition provider of the MLS team. EAS will receive naming rights to the club’s training facility, which was the first such facility in the league when it opened in 1997.

Team pays respects to ‘Thrones’
The Dubuque Fighting Saints of the U.S. Hockey League held a “Game of Thrones” night late last month, and they took the throne part quite literally. The team asked fans to bring toilet paper for donation to shelters. “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin once lived in the Dubuque area, and the frigid Iowa winters are what inspired the cold backdrop in parts of the TV series.

Colgate signs apparel sponsorship

Colgate University reached an exclusive apparel sponsorship with soccer equipment manufacturer Inaria. Inaria becomes the exclusive provider of uniforms, apparel and warm-up suits for the school’s men’s soccer program. Colgate competes in the Patriot League.

Hawkeyes upgrade baseball display

Daktronics continued a partnership with the University of Iowa by designing, manufacturing and installing an LED video display at Duane Banks Field this spring. The new display — 21.5 feet tall by 38.5 feet wide — brings more than 800 square feet of new video display space to Hawkeyes baseball games this season.

Clippers renew radio rights deal

The Los Angeles Clippers and KFWB-AM reached a multiyear renewal of their radio rights deal. The station will continue as the team’s official radio home for all preseason, regular-season and playoff games, as well as providing additional year-round coverage.

PHOENIX
Suns, sponsor launch assessment effort

The Phoenix Suns and Republic Services, the team’s official recycling and waste sponsor, launched the BluePrint Waste Assessment promotion for local businesses. Companies that sign up for a free assessment will be registered to win VIP suite tickets to a Suns home game next season.

PITTSBURGH
Pirates reach terms with W.B. Mason

The Pittsburgh Pirates reached a sponsorship agreement with W.B. Mason, naming the company the official office supply and office furniture company of the team. W.B. Mason will receive premium exposure on the outfield wall at PNC Park. W.B. Mason also joins with Pirates television partner Root Sports to present elements of all Pirates regular-season telecasts.

Kings secure hotel partnership

The Sacramento Kings and JMA Ventures announced a partnership with Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants for a proposed hotel adjacent to the team’s planned downtown arena. The 16-story tower that would house the 250-room hotel is slated to open in fall 2016, the same time as the Kings’ new venue.

Arena kiosks explain renovation plans

Spurs Sports & Entertainment is making available additional details about the renovations to AT&T Center scheduled to begin this summer. Fans can visit interactive kiosks on the AT&T Center Plaza Level that showcase the changes, which include seating upgrades, expanded and updated concourses, and arena entrance enhancements.

Cards sign National Car Rental

National Car Rental reached a five-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals to become the team’s official car rental sponsor. The deal, which runs through the 2019 season, marks the locally based company’s first sponsorship of an MLB team.

Caps fly into postseason with Boeing

Boeing signed on as a playoffs sponsor for the Washington Capitals. The agreement includes in-arena branding initiatives as well as in-game and digital elements honoring current and former U.S. military service members.

H&M saddles up for tour

Clothing retailer H&M signed on as a sponsor of the Longines Global Champions Tour of Hamburg. The collaboration is tied to the fifth leg of the show jumping circuit, scheduled for Germany in May.

Liverpool wearing new New Balance

New Balance unveiled its new kits for Liverpool FC. The classic checkerboard style is meant to be a throwback to the 1980s, according to a Boston Globe report. The kits go on sale to the public May 14 for about $75 each. New Balance is expected to release its first soccer shoe this summer.

Players could lose big money

Manchester City players will lose $731,600 per player in bonuses if they fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, according to a (London) Daily Mail report. The EPL club, which has lagged in its Champions League play, gives players incentivized contracts to make sure the team stays within financial fair play requirements.

Team extends with petroleum firm

Second Bundesliga club FC Nuremberg extended its sponsorship deal with petroleum company Ernst Braun Mineralöle GmbH, according to a SoccerEx report. The company will continue as a third-level partner until the end of the 2016-17 season.

City moves toward 2024 bid

Paris moved a step closer to bidding for the 2024 Olympics when the city council approved a resolution in favor of hosting, according to multiple reports last week. The bid, which may get the final go-ahead in June, is supported by French President Francois Hollande and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.

Games will tap into late-night culture

The 2016 Olympics will play at times to a late-night crowd, according to an AP report. The men’s and women’s beach volleyball finals on Copacabana Beach will wrap up at about 1:30 a.m. The beach, the sport and the late hour aim to produce the party-hard, party-late kind of image Rio organizers want to portray.
