WNBA ads air sound of music

The WNBA plans to introduce new television spots in its "This Is Who I Am" campaign this weekend.

The spots will have an almost music-video feel and will incorporate female singers Fefe Dobson, Martina McBride and Skye Sweetnam, said Teri Schindler, vice president of WNBA broadcasting.

Song tracks that convey passion and energy were selected, Schindler said.

Other imagery in the spots includes WNBA game highlights, lifestyle shots of players, and players doing active things such as running, lifting or stretching.

The spots will be the third slate of ads in the "This Is Who I Am" effort, which debuted in 2002.

"We're always trying to evolve the message," Schindler said.

As of press time last week, WNBA officials were still reviewing and making final adjustments to the ads. The exact number of spots that will be created and the schedule in which they will air was unavailable.

The timing of the spots, two weeks before the WNBA draft and on the weekend of the Women's Final Four, bridges the gap between the end of the college basketball season and the start of the WNBA season. League officials said the aim is to get people excited for the coming season, which begins in May.
