Football Notes: Saudi Crown Prince's Rep Denies Interest In ManU

Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman's media minister denied reports linking Bin Salman with a £3.8B ($4.9B) takeover of ManU. ManU's American owners bought the club for £790M in May '05. Saudi Media Minister Turki al-Shabanah said, "Manchester United held a meeting with PIF [Public Investment Fund] Saudi to discuss a sponsorship opportunity. No deal has materialized" (BBC, 2/18).

La Liga "is considering scrapping matches" on Friday nights and Monday nights, according to Barcelona-based Sport. League President Javier Tebas is "keen on spreading matches out across the weekend" for TV purposes. Games in these two timeslots "have proven hugely unpopular with Spanish football fans" (FOOTBALL ESPANA, 2/18).

Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales said that Spain would be interested in hosting the World Cup in the future, so long as it has "the support of UEFA." There is a "good relationship" between the RFEF and the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), and there is talk that the two federations "could unite" to form a World Cup bid (MARCA, 2/15).

In a "legal setback" for UEFA, Turkish side Galatasaray won an appeal to block further investigation of the club's compliance with financial monitoring rules. The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Friday upheld Galatasaray's challenge against a UEFA panel which "wanted to open a deeper investigation of an already settled case" (AP, 2/15).

Singapore’s first footballer signed to the EPL, Ben Davis, "missed his compulsory military service and now faces charges that carry up to three years in jail," the city-state’s defense ministry said on Monday. Singapore’s refusal to allow Davis, 18, to defer his national service "sparked a debate last year over whether the country’s rigid conscription law is stifling its youth from pursuing their dreams." Davis signed a two-year contract with Fulham (REUTERS, 2/18).
