Davis Cup On 'Its Last Legs,' Rod Laver Warns

Tennis legend Rod Laver expressed his concerns for the future of the Davis Cup. GETTY IMAGES

Rod Laver said that he is "deeply concerned for the future of the Davis Cup" amid a tennis calendar that now includes two other prominent men’s teams events -- the new ATP Cup and the his own Laver Cup, according to Chris Barrett of THE AGE. Now run by footballer Gerard Piqué’s Spanish investment group, the Davis Cup has undergone a $4B ($2.8B) makeover that "cuts out the traditional home-and-away ties" in favor of an 18-nation finals "extravaganza" to be played over a week in Madrid in November. Where that leaves the Davis Cup, first played in 1900, "is unclear." But with leading players such as Roger Federer having "questioned its overhaul" and Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt "unsure" about how successful the new format will be, Laver "is worried." He said, "I think the Davis Cup is on its last legs. It just seems like it is getting lost. But you haven't got anyone in there fighting for the Davis Cup" (THE AGE, 1/23).
