U.K. Taxman Reportedly Widens Scope Of Investigation Into Football

Tax officials "have widened the scope of their investigation into football," with more agents and players "under scrutiny for issues including image rights abuse and dual representation," according to Lambert & Lawton of the London DAILY MAIL. According to the latest available figures, seven more agents have reportedly been investigated by U.K. tax authority HMRC, taking the figure to 38, and "the number of players being investigated has risen to 173." More than £20M ($25.9M) in unpaid taxes has been recovered over a three-month period, bringing the total since '15 to £355M ($460M). However, officials "have dropped their inquiries into four clubs and there are now 40 clubs being looked into for issues including image rights and agents fees." West Ham and Newcastle are reportedly "among those who remain under investigation," according to papers obtained from the High Court. Anonymized examples from the investigation "include employment income being disguised as image rights payments," dual representation by an agent -- where an agent acts for both the player and club in a contract negotiation -- offshore agents and payments to other parties (DAILY MAIL, 1/21).
