Names In The News: British Court Rules Vijay Mallya Can Be Extradited

A British court on Monday ruled Indian tycoon VIJAY MALLYA, the owner of Kingfisher beer and head of the Force India Formula 1 team, "can be extradited to his homeland to face fraud charges." Mallya "has been fighting to remain in Britain" but judge EMMA ARBUTHNOT said that Mallya "had misrepresented how loans received from banks would be used and therefore had a case to answer." Mallya will be able to make a final appeal against the ruling (AFP, 12/10). ... Almost 11 million viewers tuned in live to see former Tottenham and West Ham Manager HARRY REDKNAPP win the ITV reality show, I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me out Of Here!, overnight ratings showed (BBC, 12/10). ... PAUL SHERWEN died of a heart attack, aged 62. He was a "pioneering member" of the group of English-speaking cyclists nicknamed the Foreign Legion, a five-time Tour de France finisher and, with PHIL LIGGETT, half of the Channel 4 commentary pair that brought the race to British viewers for the first time during the late '80s (London GUARDIAN, 12/10). ... Top14 side Edinburgh Rugby head coach RICHARD COCKERILL "emerged as a surprise contender" to become the next England manager after the 2019 World Cup. Interim Rugby Football Union CEO NIGEL MELVILLE revealed that he has "drawn up a list of potential successors" to EDDIE JONES, and Cockerill is on it (SCOTSMAN, 12/10). ... Test results published by La Nazione allegedly showed former Serie A side Fiorentina captain DAVIDE ASTORI had an irregular heartbeat. Two doctors who issued medical certificates declaring Astori "fit to play despite evidence he suffered from a heart condition prior to his death" are under investigation for negligent homicide. The player was found dead in his hotel room on March 4 ahead of a match against Udinese (AFP, 12/10). ... The Japan Gymnastics Association announced Monday that it "lifted the temporary suspension of two senior officials over the alleged harassment" of 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympian SAE MIYAKAWA. The sport’s governing body reinstated CHIEKO TSUKAHARA and her husband, association VP MITSUO TSUKAHARA, after an independent committee concluded that while there were "a lot of inappropriate points lacking in consideration," the two "committed no acts that could be subject to punishment" (KYODO, 12/10).
