British bobsleigh athletes will miss the season-opening World Cup races in Sigulda, Latvia, this weekend "as a result of UK Sport's funding cut." The sport received over £5M in the run up to the PyeongChang Olympics "but lost that after failing to win a medal." A small amount of funding has been provided by UK Sport to help GB compete at the World Championships in March (BBC, 12/6).
A bid to set up a Pacific Islands Super Rugby team has failed after competition organizers "decided it was not commercially viable," the Fiji Rugby Union said. Including a Pacific team in the southern hemisphere competition was "seen as a game changer" for rugby in the islands, a "hotbed of talent" where top players have headed overseas "to chase more lucrative opportunities." FRU CEO John O'Connor confirmed that a joint bid from Fiji, Samoa and Tonga was submitted in June to SANZAAR (AFP, 12/5).
