A German court sentenced a German-Russian man to 14 years in prison on Tuesday for detonating a bomb near the Borussia Dortmund team bus in '17 "as part of a money-making scheme which injured one of the club's players." The defendant, identified as SERGEI W., admitted to staging the roadside attack in April '17 but said that he "wanted to make money rather than harm or kill anyone." He was charged with 28 counts of attempted murder, inflicting grievous bodily harm and causing an explosion (REUTERS, 11/27). ... The William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award was shared for the first time as the story of an 11-year-old's "remarkable swim" across the English Channel and a biography of Northern Irish boxer EAMONN MAGEE "divided the spoils" on Tuesday. "A Boy in the Water" tells how author TOM GREGORY became the youngest person to swim the Channel in '88. He shared the £30,000 ($38,200) prize with PAUL D. GIBSON, whose book "The Lost Soul of Eamonn Magee" is "much darker," telling the story of the welterweight inside and outside the ring, where "shocking violence was seemingly his daily companion" (REUTERS, 11/27). ... MINJEE LEE beat JASON DAY and MARC LEISHMAN to win this year's GREG NORMAN Medal, becoming the first woman to take Australian golf's "most-prestigous individual award" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 11/27). ... STEVE HANSEN is set to quit as All Blacks coach after the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and take up a newly-created role as New Zealand Rugby's director of rugby. That is the "stunning claim" made by former Irish test int'l ALAN QUINLAN. Quinlan said that he spoke to former All Blacks JUSTIN MARSHALL and JEFF WILSON, who "claim to inside information on Hansen's future" (NEW ZEALAND HERALD, 11/27). ... SONNY BILL WILLIAMS and Australian media personality STU LAUNDY will "step into the ring" in Sydney on Saturday for a good cause. Just three weeks "after being ruled out of the back end of the All Blacks tour with a shoulder injury," Williams does so with New Zealand Rugby's "blessing" (STUFF, 11/27). ... STEPHANIE GILMORE "entered the pantheon of surfing greats" after winning her seventh world title to equal fellow Australian LAYNE BEACHLEY's all-time women's record. Gilmore was confirmed as world champion at the season-ending Maui Pro when LAKEY PETERSON "failed to progress" past the early stages of the event. It marks the first time Gilmore has been world champion since '14 (London GUARDIAN, 11/26). ... MICK SCHUMACHER "moved a step closer" to following his world champion father, MICHAEL, into Formula 1 by agreeing to race for Prema in Formula 2. The 19-year-old German won the Formula 3 European title with Prema this year, and said that moving into F2 was the "logical step" (BBC, 11/27). ... Former Juventus directors ANTONIO GIRAUDOLUCIANO MOGGI and ROBERTO BETTEGA were acquitted of false accounting charges dating back to '01. The three were implicated in the '06 Calciopoli scandal, "leaving the club that summer in disgrace." Prosecutors had, in separate charges, "accused the three of cooking the books" by overstating ticket sales and commissioning Juventus intermediary fees which did not exist (FOOTBALL ITALIA, 11/26). ... Former South Korea football int'l JANG HAK-YONG received a lifetime ban from the Korea FA after an attempt to fix a domestic league game. Jang was arrested in September and sentenced to 10 months in jail. After Jang's release, he will be barred from participating in any football-related activities (AP, 11/27).
