Tennis NZ Hoping To Receive Funding Ahead Of Tokyo 2020

Tennis New Zealand is hoping that with the country having a "genuine chance" of winning a medal in men's doubles at Tokyo 2020, High Performance Sport NZ "will at last start funding" it, according to David Long of STUFF. Tennis is the only "major sport" that does not get any funding from High Performance Sport NZ, "with shooting, wrestling, surfing and beach volleyball getting funding ahead of it." The "continual snubbing" is a result of HPSNZ being Olympics-focused and New Zealand tennis players not "showing the potential to win a medal in recent years." But Tennis NZ CEO Julie Paterson believes that has changed with the "continual rise up the rankings" of Michael Venus, Artem Sitak and Marcus Daniell. Paterson said that Tennis NZ is pleading its case to HPSNZ now (STUFF, 11/18).
