UEFA Suspends Investigation Into PSG Pending CAS Decision

UEFA suspended its investigation into Paris St. Germain for alleged financial fair play violations, according to L’ÉQUIPE. UEFA said that it is waiting for a decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport. UEFA said, “We must await the judgement of CAS regarding the appeal of PSG in order to process the dossier.” UEFA investigators want PSG’s sponsorship contract with the Qatar Tourism Authority “devalued from the club’s accounts,” which were previously approved for the ’13-14 and ’14-15 seasons. Should that be allowed, PSG would have a deficit, which is forbidden by FFP rules. The club, which was already sanctioned for FFP violations because of the same QTA contract, “could face heavy penalties including exclusion from European competition” (L’ÉQUIPE, 11/14). 20 MINUTES reported PSG’s contract with QTA was reported in the club’s accounts to be worth €100M but had a “real value” of €58M (20 MINUTES, 11/14).

NOT WORTH IT: 20 MINUTES also reported Chelsea's N'Golo Kanté reportedly refused to accept offshore payments from his club to "help him avoid paying income tax." During Kanté's transfer from Leicester City to Chelsea in '16, Chelsea execs proposed to him that €5M of his salary be "paid in the form of image rights, half of which would be paid to a screen company registered in Jersey, a famous tax haven." Kanté reportedly set up the offshore company but did not sign the contract, which would have saved up to €1M for the club and the player. An email from Kanté's representatives to Chelsea said, "After reading numerous articles in the press on image rights and tax investigations launched against players and clubs, N'Golo is increasingly concerned that the setup proposed to him could be questioned by tax authorities. N'Golo decided that he does not want to take any risks" (20 MINUTES, 11/14).
