FA Charges Daniel Sturridge With Breaching Betting Rules

England and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge was charged with misconduct by the FA for "alleged breaches of its betting rules," according to Jeremy Wilson of the London TELEGRAPH. It is understood that the charge relates to Sturridge's loan move from Liverpool to League Championship side West Bromwich Albion earlier this year, with the FA specifically mentioning "the period of January 2018" in its statement. As well as gambling on games, the FA rules prohibit players from "direct or indirect involvement in betting on any matter connected to football," including player transfers, managerial changes or team selection. They are also forbidden from passing on information which they have "obtained by virtue of his or her position within the game and which is not publicly available at that time" for any outside party to then use while placing a bet. The case is expected to center on whether information was "knowingly passed on." EPL sides Newcastle United and Southampton had also been interested in signing the striker. Sturridge, who has until 6pm on Nov. 20 to formally respond to the charge, "already told Liverpool that he has never gambled on football." The club stressed that Sturridge has "cooperated fully" with the FA's inquiries and assured it that he will "continue to do so." The FA "refused to comment on the exact nature" of Sturridge's charge on Sunday. Sturridge's representative "had nothing further to add following Liverpool's statement" (TELEGRAPH, 11/12).
