Former Sri Lanka cricket captain SANATH JAYASURIYA emphasized his "integrity and transparency" in response to being charged by the Int'l Cricket Council's anti-corruption unit. He issued a "carefully-worded statement" in which he suggested "strict legal advice" prevents him from commenting fully before submitting his response to the ICC (PA, 10/16). ... Britain's most decorated Winter Olympian, LIZZY YARNOLD, who won consecutive skeleton Gold Medals in Sochi and PyeongChang, announced her retirement. She said, "I have lived out my dream and achieved far more than I ever thought possible in my 10 years in the sport, but it's time to move on. I am ready for a fresh challenge" (London GUARDIAN, 10/15). ... A "legal stoush is brewing" between JARRYD HAYNE and his U.S. rape accuser over whether the rugby player should be forced to fly to California for a "potential grilling by her lawyers." Hayne wants to be deposed in Australia ahead of a civil trial in San Jose, Calif., but the ­alleged victim, known in court filings by the initials J.V., said that Hayne "should be in California for the questioning." Lawyers for both sides have indicated a judge "may have to decide the matter" (AAP, 10/16). ... Ukrainian twin brothers GLEB and VADIM ALEKSEENKO were banned from tennis for life and fined $250,000 each for "multiple match-fixing offences," the Tennis Integrity Unit said on Monday. The 35-year-olds, who are both ranked outside the top-1,000 in the world, were found guilty of the offenses at lower-level Futures tournaments in Romania, Russia, Germany and Turkey between June '15 and Jan. '16 (REUTERS, 10/15). ... McLaren Formula 1 driver STOFFEL VANDOORNE will switch to the all-electric Formula E series at the end of the F1 season, the Mercedes-affiliated HWA RACELAB team said on Monday. HWA said that the 26-year-old Belgian will join Britain's GARY PAFFETT, 37, who won his second German Touring Cars (DTM) championship with Mercedes over the weekend (REUTERS, 10/15). ... Former lightweight champion EDDIE ALVAREZ "dropped a bombshell" by confirming he has swapped UFC for Singapore-based ONE Championship. The signing is being seen as a "massive statement of intent" from ONE, which was established in '11 but has "quickly developed a huge audience with regular productions in the Asia-Pacific region" (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST, 10/16). ... West Indies national cricket team head coach STUART LAW was suspended for the first two one-day internationals of the series against India following his public criticism of match officials during a recent test match between the sides in Hyderabad. The Australian received a 100% fine of his match fees and three demerit points for breaching the Int'l Cricket Council's code of conduct during the West Indies' 10-wicket loss to India (REUTERS, 10/16). ... Former Argentine Superliga side Newell’s Old Boys coach and player MARCELO BIELSA contributed more than $2.5M to a new hotel at the site of the club’s training complex. The facility will be inaugurated on Nov. 3 (CLARÍN, 10/16).
