Football Notes: PSG's Champions League Win Under Investigation

French authorities are investigating potential match fixing in Paris St. Germain's 6-1 Champions League win over Red Star Belgrade this month. A Red Star official "allegedly placed a bet" of almost €5M ($5.8M) for the Serbian club to lose by five goals. The French Professional Football League (LFP) said, "Ethics and integrity of competitions are fundamental values of French professional football, and as such, the league actively participates in anti-corruption programs" (L’ÉQUIPE, 10/13).

Former UEFA President Michel Platini filed a complaint seeking to determine how Swiss judicial authorities learned of a 2M Swiss franc payment from FIFA "which resulted in his ban for ethics violations." Platini said in May that he was "cleared by Swiss authorities of any criminal wrongdoing and wants to return to the game" (REUTERS, 10/12).

Teams will be allowed to make a fourth substitution "if their matches go into extra-time during next year’s Asian Cup finals," the Asian Football Confederation said on Friday. The Int'l FA Board earlier this year approved the use of a fourth substitute during extra time and the rule "proved to be a success" during the World Cup in Russia (REUTERS, 10/12).

Gibraltar won a competitive game for the first time by beating Armenia in the Nations League -- and "received an apology" from the host after the wrong national anthem was played beforehand. The anthem of Liechtenstein was "mistakenly used instead of Gibraltar's." Gibraltar's two previous victories -- against Malta and Latvia -- had come in friendly matches (BBC, 10/13).
