Football Notes: Swiss Watchdog To Audit Credit Suisse's FIFA Ties

Credit Suisse failed to adequately combat money laundering in suspected corruption cases linked to FIFA and Venezuelan and Brazilian state oil companies, Swiss financial watchdog FINMA said on Monday, "dealing a blow to the bank’s reputation." FINMA will appoint an independent auditor to oversee the bank’s anti-money laundering processes, but "stopped short of forcing it to return any profits that it might have illegally reaped." Credit Suisse said in a statement that the Swiss watchdog uncovered "legacy weaknesses," adding that it has acted to "bolster compliance" since CEO Tidjane Thiam took over in March '15 (REUTERS, 9/17).

La Liga on Monday presented its first football academy in Egypt "with the objective of developing new talent in the Arab country." The academy has been open for one week in the New Cairo neighborhood in the capital and "already has 75 registered players" (EFE, 9/17).

Six English Football League Cup third-round matches will use VAR as part of the technology's "ongoing trial in English football." It comes after VAR was trialed in four of the EFL Cup second-round fixtures last month, all at Premier League stadiums (London DAILY MAIL, 9/17).

The Referees' Association of Ghana handed lifetime bans to six more referees "in the wake of an investigation into bribery." It also banned 47 match officials for 10 years each, "while another 14 were exonerated." It brings the total with life bans to eight and those with 10-year bans to 53 (BBC, 9/17).

Five people were killed and seven injured in a stampede after an African Champions League match in Luanda, Angola, on Saturday, the sports ministry said. Witnesses said that the people "were crushed to death when they flooded out of the stadium" after the game between Angola's Primeiro de Agosto and TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to local reports, the match was attended by a capacity crowd of 50,000 spectators (London INDEPENDENT, 9/17).
