Madrid Mayor Confident City Will Keep Madrid Open, Land Davis Cup

Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena confirmed that "not only will the city not lose the Madrid Open, it will also add another tournament, the Davis Cup," according to the EFE. Carmena's government and opposing parties in July agreed to a "counter-offer to negotiate the continuity of the Madrid Open and did not rule out building a new stadium," as organizers had requested. The Madrid City Council, however, "believes it will be difficult to cover the cost." The Madrid Open is guaranteed to remain in the city through '21, and the city council "wants to prolong" the contract after Madrid Open CEO Gerard Tsobanian "threatened to leave the city" (EFE, 9/17).
