Seven CEO Believes 'Curiosity' Factor Will Boost Cricket Ratings

Tim WornerGETTY IMAGES

The CEO of cricket's new free-to-air broadcaster in Australia, Seven, said that the ball-tampering scandal "could enhance" the "curiosity" factor heading into this summer's campaign, according to Jon Pierik of THE AGE. Tim Worner expects cricket to "enjoy strong ratings" in the first year of a new A$1.2B ($880M) rights deal with Fox Sports. Seven will televise all tests against India and Sri Lanka and 43 Big Bash League matches, while Fox Sports also has the rights to all BBL matches and one-day internationals. Worner insisted that come the test series opener against India and the start of the BBL, both in December, the events of South Africa "will not weigh on interest." He said, "I don't think the ball-tampering incident is going to have any effect on ratings whatsoever. Anyone who tells me something that happened in Cape Town six months ago or whatever is going to effect what size audience tunes in for the Brisbane Heat versus the Perth Scorchers -- they're kidding themselves. ... I actually think it's going to build even more curiosity combined with the fact it's an all new approach to broadcasting cricket" (THE AGE, 8/18).
