An "ugly brawl that broke out" between Australian Football League sides Geelong and Melbourne fans at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday "could result in segregated fans at future matches or life bans for the perpetrators," according to Anthony Colangelo of THE AGE. In "yet another example of violent fans clashing at AFL matches," police are also investigating a separate incident involving an allegation of assault. The brawl occurred following Geelong's "dramatic after-the-siren win" against Melbourne, when opposing supporters "came to blows in the standing area of the ground." One Geelong fan can be seen "attempting to stomp on a Melbourne fan as the group of men grapple and punch their way down the terrace." In a second video posted of the scenes after the fight, a Melbourne fan "can be seen being restrained while abusing a Geelong supporter." Victoria Police said that they "were aware of the post-game altercation but that there had been no reports to police about the incident." Kardinia Park Stadium Trust CEO Michael Brown said that he was "absolutely disgusted." Brown: "Kardinia Park has been such a family ground and it was a great game of footy." He did not rule out life bans for the perpetrators, "nor would he rule out taking drastic action such as fan segregation when asked about the possibility of it." Brown added that they had "already strengthened security measures" at the ground for night games and had begun serving lower strength beer (THE AGE, 7/22).
