Franchise Notes: Gold Coast Suns Wants BBL Franchise In City

Australian Football League side Gold Coast Suns hopes to "cash in" on top-flight cricket's three-year "fling" in the city with a Big Bash League franchise of its own. Metricon Stadium, the Suns' home ground, will host three BBL games and a T20 int'l this coming summer, with three BBL games also "locked in for each of the next two seasons" (AAP, 7/20).

League Championship side Bolton Wanderers said that it has come to an "amicable agreement" over a recent players' strike. The club was meant to play a friendly at St. Mirren on July 7 but it was canceled "when the strike was called over unpaid wages and bonuses." The club said, "Both parties have reached an amicable agreement to resolve this situation" (BBC, 7/18).

League of Ireland Premier Division side Bray Wanderers said that outstanding wages owed to players were being processed ahead of Thursday's league game at Bohs. Last week, Bray players, who were last paid before today on May 25, "confirmed they intended to pursue strike action as their wait continued" (RTE, 7/19).

The Barcelona women's team will take part in this summer's tour of the U.S. From Tuesday to July 29, the squad will be in Beaverton, Oregon, and L.A. with the men. It is the first time Barcelona's men and women have toured abroad together (Barcelona).

Northern Territory Cricket is using the exposure gained from having David Warner playing in its Twenty20 competition to "strengthen its case" for staging an int'l match featuring the Australian men's team. Warner flew to Darwin on Thursday "in preparation for his first game on Australian soil since being handed his 12-month suspension for ball tampering" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 7/19).
