UK Sport Could Cut Funding For Bobsleigh, Speed Skating

U.K. speed skater Elise Christie fell short of expectations at PyeongChang 2018.GETTY IMAGES

The U.K.'s bobsleigh and short-track speed skating teams "face a potential reduction to their funding" on Monday after "disastrous performances" at the Winter Olympics earlier this year, according to Rebecca Myers of the SUNDAY TIMES. Both sports, which received around £5M each in investment during the last Olympic cycle, "missed their targets by a wide margin and failed to return home with any medals." It is "likely they will see this reflected" when UK Sport announces the investment decisions for the next four-year cycle of Winter Olympic and Paralympic sports, which looks ahead to Beijing 2022. Speed skating was tasked with winning one to two medals at PyeongChang in February, "with its hopes focused on world champion Elise Christie." However, Christie had a "calamitous Games." The bobsleigh teams were tasked with a minimum top-five finish after "strong performances at the World Cup," but none of the sleds finished higher than 8th (SUNDAY TIMES, 7/1).
