Nigerian World Cup Shirt Generating Record Demand

Nigeria is not one of the favorites to win the 2018 World Cup, but it "certainly seems to be the leading favorite for best kit," according to Kwasi Gyamfi Asiedu of QUARTZ. The team's World Cup jersey went on sale Tuesday, but it had "already received three million pre-orders," according to the Nigeria Football Federation, which said that the number was revealed by Nike during a meeting at its Europe HQ in Amsterdam. Nike is yet to independently confirm the number, but 3 million "would break records for an African team and even some of the biggest clubs in the world." In '16, ManU sold the most replica jerseys in the world with 2.8 million sales. Only a limited number of jerseys have been released, which means any pre-orders are "coming form the Nigerian diaspora" (QUARTZ, 5/26).
