Football Notes: FSF Warns LGBT Fans To Be Prepared At World Cup

Football Supporters' Federation -- in partnership with the FA and Foreign & Commonwealth Office -- issued travel advice warning "attitudes may be less tolerant than at home" for fans attending the World Cup. According to the FSF guide published on Gov.uk, "same-sex sexual activity" was decriminalized in Russia in '93, but "fans have been warned there are no laws to protect LGBT people from discrimination" (London TELEGRAPH, 5/22).

The League Championship playoff final between Aston Villa and Fulham on Saturday "could be worth at least£160M ($215M) to the winner. Villa and Fulham hope to join Wolverhampton Wanderers and Cardiff City in the Premier League next season. The winner will "benefit from future additional revenue" of at least £160M across the next three seasons, which "could rise to in excess of" £280M ($376M) if the club survives its first campaign in the Premier League (PA, 5/22).

Defibrillators have been installed at six football clubs in Wales, with "plans to fund others" in a bid to minimize deaths from sudden cardiac arrest. The first six were funded by Wales football players, who donated their match fees from their friendly against Mexico in L.A. on May 29. Ground staff will be trained to use the devices under the scheme, "which aims to have them at all clubs in the country" (BBC, 5/21).

League Two side Notts County will relaunch a women's team "just 13 months after giving up a place in the top flight and folding under financial pressure." Club Owner Alan Hardy "called time" on efforts to save the Women's Super League 1 side in April '17 when faced by debts of around £500,000. But Notts aims to join a regional league for the '18-19 season and hopes to reach the second tier "in five years" (BBC, 5/21).
