Football Notes: Chivas Unable To Sign Players Until Debt Is Cleared

Liga MX President Enrique Bonilla confirmed Chivas Guadalajara will be unable to sign players this summer "as long it continues to owe its players." The club will be able to acquire players "as soon as it clears the debt" (LA AFICIÓN, 5/20).

Former England women's national team Manager Hope Powell said that a Women's Super League of more than 12 teams would "dilute the talent and quality" of the division. WSL side Brighton Manager Powell will "lead the club in the top tier next season" after the club's application was accepted in December. This season's WSL contained 10 teams but that "could be increased" to as many as 14 sides for the '18-19 campaign. Asked about a possible 14-team league, Powell said, "I'm not sure -- 12, maximum, might make it competitive" (BBC, 5/21).

Ekstraklasa side Legia Warsaw won the Polish Championship after its final game of the season at Lech Poznan was abandoned following crowd trouble and it was "awarded a 3-0 walkover." Lech fans "threw flares and invaded the pitch" after Legia went 2-0 ahead, causing the referee to stop the game in the 77th minute. The Polish Ekstraklasa league commission later "granted the walkover" and Lech said that it would not appeal (BBC, 5/21).
