RFU, Harlequins Considering Cutting Ties With RIM

The Rugby Football Union and Premiership Rugby side Harlequins are "considering their investment" in the company that is staging the Wales-South Africa test in the U.S. "after its perilous financial situation came to light," according to Will Kelleher of the London DAILY MAIL. There were reportedly "concerned discussions at USA Rugby board meetings in March." They considered changing the date, venue or even the teams for the test to be played on June 2 in Washington, DC -- with the U.S. "potentially parachuting in to face Wales." This talk "has accelerated due to the decline of Rugby International Marketing" -- a for-profit subsidiary of USA Rugby tasked with staging tests -- which is organizing the Wales-South Africa game. The company lost £3M by the end of '17 and "could be on the brink of collapse." The RFU and Quins are minority investors, having invested £1.4M each into RIM in '15 and '16, respectively. Both "may be forced to abandon their involvement with the company" (DAILY MAIL, 4/26).
