Australia To Face England, NZ In Cricket World Cup Blockbusters

Australia will play "back-to-back blockbusters" against England and New Zealand at Lord’s next year when its Cricket World Cup defense "goes on the line at the home of cricket," according to Ben Horne of the Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH. The "crisis-ridden side has 12 months to rebuild itself for the marquee tournament" to be hosted in the U.K. as details emerged on Thursday of the team's schedule. In a new-look format where all 10 teams will play each other once in the group stages, "Australia’s two biggest matches will be staged at Lord’s." Australia has "the benefit of opening the tournament against minnows Afghanistan and the inconsistent West Indies before they meet the banner countries" (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 4/26). England will open the tournament at The Oval on May 30 against South Africa. Pakistan's first game will be against the West Indies at Nottingham's Trent Bridge on May 31. India's first tournament game will be against South Africa at Southampton's Hampshire Bowl (ICC).

OFF THE LIST: In London, Elizabeth Ammon reported the London Stadium "will not host Cricket World Cup matches next summer." Organizers looked at holding two key matches at the venue "because of its potential to hold up to 60,000 people." However, the cost of converting the stadium into a cricket venue "was deemed too high to make it worthwhile for two matches" (LONDON TIMES, 4/26).

FULL CONFIDENCE: REUTERS' Amlan Chakraborty reported the BCCI on Wednesday "ruled out losing the 2021 Champions Trophy and the 2023 World Cup over tax issues," saying that it remains confident of "getting government exemptions for both the events." The ICC "suffered a revenue shortfall" after the Indian government refused to exempt the 2016 World Twenty20 competition held in the country and "there has not been any change in that stance," despite the BCCI’s "dogged persuasion since then." Fearing a repeat loss, the ICC said in February that it was "exploring alternative venues for the Champions Trophy while the Indian board would continue negotiations" (REUTERS, 4/25). In Mumbai, Shamik Chakrabarty reported BCCI Treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry said that "doing away with the Champions Trophy" would result in a loss of approximately $30M to BCCI coffers. The ICC conclave in Auckland last year reportedly "floated the idea of replacing the 2021 Champions Trophy with a World T20, which the BCCI team rejected" (INDIAN EXPRESS, 4/25).
