Liverpool Fan In Critical Condition After Attack Before CL Match

Two men from Rome were arrested "on suspicion of attempted murder after a Liverpool supporter was left fighting for his life following an altercation" between fans ahead of the Champions League semifinal against AS Roma at Anfield, according to Sam Dean of the London TELEGRAPH. The injured man, "believed to be from Ireland and with his brother," was being treated for his injuries at Walton Neurological Centre, "where his condition is described as critical," Merseyside Police said. The 25-year-old and 26-year-old "were arrested after police launched an operation to track down the man's assailants." Liverpool said that it was "shocked and appalled" by the incident and "urged fans and those who attended the game to help Merseyside Police with their appeal for information." Detective Inspector Paul Speight said, "Paramedics treated him at the scene and he was taken by ambulance to Walton Neurological Centre, where he is being treated for a head injury. His condition is currently described as critical and his next of kin have been informed" (TELEGRAPH, 4/25). The BBC reported Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said that the "thoughts and prayers" of those at the club were with the injured fan (BBC, 4/25).

'VILE ATTACK': REUTERS' Peter Rutherford reported UEFA condemned the “vile attack” and said that potential disciplinary proceedings "could be initiated after detailed reports of the incident are received." The organization said, "The perpetrators of this ignominious attack have no place in and around football and we trust they will be dealt with utmost severity by the authorities" (REUTERS, 4/25). In London, Charlie Parker reported violence broke out before kickoff when Italians, "armed with hammers, belts and batons, ambushed Liverpool supporters, leaving some with head injuries," according to official sources. The attack happened just after 7pm outside a pub near the stadium where fans had been drinking. Hooded Roma fans "dressed in black anoraks stood in the middle of the street chanting aggressively at Liverpool fans" and making "come on" gestures. Video taken moments later "shows them running riot as security staff scrambled to contain fighting." Officers put cordons outside The Albert pub as an ambulance arrived (LONDON TIMES, 4/25). In London, Frances Perraudin reported AS Roma said in a statement that it condemned in the strongest possible terms "the abhorrent behaviour of a small minority of travelling fans who brought shame on the club and the vast majority of Roma's well-behaved supporters" after clashes outside the stadium. The club said that it was cooperating with Liverpool, UEFA and the authorities, "adding that its thoughts were with the victim's family" (GUARDIAN, 4/25).
