IOC To Remain Neutral Over Japan, North Korea Rift

Tokyo 2020 Olympics Coordination Committee Chair John Coates said Tuesday that the IOC "must remain neutral" on the subject of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea, with the country set to be invited to compete at the 2020 Games, according to Sam Green of KYODO. Coates said that he understands the "terrible pain" of those affected by the abductions in the '70s and '80s. After visiting North Korea last month, IOC President Thomas Bach said that the country will "definitely" take part in the Tokyo Olympics and the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, but "enthusiasm has been muted in Japan," where the North's nuclear and missile programs, in addition to the abduction issue, "weigh heavily." Japan officially lists 17 citizens as abduction victims and "suspects North Korea's involvement in many more disappearances." Coates: "The IOC's position is one of political neutrality and will remain that" (KYODO, 4/24).

YOUTH GAMES: The IOC announced the composition of the IOC Evaluation Commission for the 4th Summer Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in Africa in '22. Bach appointed Turkish IOC VP Ugur Erdener chair of the commission. Erdener is also the president of World Archery and has a wealth of experience in the Youth Olympic Games (IOC).
