Premiership Rugby Could Still Scrap Relegation Despite Reports

It has yet to be determined how long Premiership Rugby teams would be protected.GETTY IMAGES

Ring-fencing Premiership Rugby and scrapping promotion and relegation is "still firmly on the cards" despite reports that top-flight clubs "were set to perform a U-turn on the idea," according to Will Kelleher of the London DAILY MAIL. The elite clubs reportedly "could still bring up the draw-bridge on their league temporarily," perhaps by the '20-21 season. Club owners "could well agree to maintain the status-quo," but that has not yet been decided. The Professional Game Board was scheduled to meet on Thursday and while the merits of promotion and relegation "may be discussed," it was not an item on the official agenda. Representatives from Premiership clubs were set to make the proposal at the meeting but reports suggested an agreement could not be reached at last week's Premier Rugby board meeting. It is understood one club will "come up" from the Rugby Football Union Championship to replace one relegated from the Premiership "as normal next season," and "even if the top league is protected it will certainly not be a permanent move" (DAILY MAIL, 4/19).
