AELTC Seeks To Take Over Wimbledon Park Golf Club

The Wimbledon complex could triple in size it acquires the neighboring golf club.GETTY IMAGES

Fresh moves are being made by the All England Lawn Tennis Club to "swallow up" the 73-acre golf course that stands across the road from the Wimbledon tennis venue, according to Mike Dickson of the London DAILY MAIL. But the speed of the "biggest expansion in Wimbledon's history" all "hinges on the complex rules" of the Wimbledon Park Golf Club. It "seems a renewed offer to buy out the lease" -- reported to be "almost double" the one of £25M made by Wimbledon three years ago -- is "causing a shift in attitudes at the golf club," which the AELTC "wishes to annex to provide much-needed extra space." An "eventual acquisition is inevitable, and serious efforts are now under way for it to happen within the next few years, with huge implications for the world-famous tennis championships." However, in an "unusual and complex" tale of the kind of politics found in British sports clubs, legal experts financed by the tennis club are "having to pore over the golf establishment's rulebook to find a way to entice its 750 members into an early sale" (DAILY MAIL, 4/18). In London, Jonathan Prynn reported Wimbledon Park Golf Club members including TV personalities Piers Morgan and Ant & Dec "could be in line for windfalls of up to £100,000" ($142,000) each after it received a £50M ($71M) takeover bid from the AELTC. Only members of at least 10 years' standing would be entitled to the payouts. Roughly 300, or about 40%, joined more recently than that and "face losing their golf club without any financial compensation." The club's rulebook states that 75% of the membership would need to be in favor of the sale "for it to go ahead" (EVENING STANDARD, 4/18).
