Cornish Pirates Will Get £3M From Cornwall Council For New Stadium

Rendering of the proposed Cornwall Stadium.stadium for cornwall

Rugby Football Union Championship side Cornish Pirates' "hopes of building a new stadium to pave the way" for its promotional push to Premiership Rugby received the go-ahead on Tuesday after Cornwall Council voted in favor of funding part of the development plans, according to Jack de Menezes of the London INDEPENDENT. Winning the vote 69-41 with seven councilors abstaining, a number of Pirates fans in the public gallery "cheered as the result was read." Supporters of sixth-tier football club Truro City and students from Truro and Penrith College, which will share the stadium with the Pirates, "were also in attendance." Plans for the new 4,500-seat capacity Stadium for Cornwall -- which will have the "potential to expand to the Premiership minimum of 10,000 if necessary" -- can now continue, with the local council approving a plan to publicly fund £3M ($4.3M) of the £14M ($19.9M) needed to begin work. It is "not just good news for the two clubs and the college either." Cornwall is currently the only county in the U.K. without a professional stadium, a stat that was "raised as part of the argument" on Tuesday (INDEPENDENT, 4/17). In London, Owen Slot reported the "hopes and aspirations" of the Pirates "rest entirely on this project," which has been developed over a number of years. The Pirates’ potential route to the top flight has been made "more difficult recently by proposals to abolish promotion and relegation" and to "ring-fence" the Premiership. A ring-fenced top tier would "prevent the Pirates from ever getting into the Premiership," whatever the size of its ground. However, if there is an end to promotion and relegation, "it would only be for a maximum of five years" (LONDON TIMES, 4/17).
