Franchise Notes: McLaren F1 Takes Issue With Ferrari's Hire Of Mekies

McLaren Formula 1 took issue with Ferrari and FIA on Thursday after the Italian team "hired a top technical official" from FIA. Ferrari announced on Wednesday that FIA Deputy Race Dir & Head of Safety Laurent Mekies "was moving to Maranello in September." That move "triggered criticism from rival teams at the time." They said that it was "unacceptable for someone with access to secret information" to begin employment with a competitor after "such a short hiatus." McLaren Racing Dir Eric Boullier said, "We are very unhappy with the FIA for losing yet another key employee to a racing team" (REUTERS, 3/15).

Liverpool supporters "have joined forces" to urge club officials and their Man City counterparts to cap away ticket prices at £30 ($41.83) for next month's Champions League quarterfinal. Having faced "inflated costs" in their group game at Sevilla and the round of 16 tie in Porto, the Spirit Of Shankly group and Spion Kop 1906 have called on both clubs "to do the right thing." A statement on spiritofshankly.com said, "Given the escalated ticket prices for travelling supporters so far in this season's competition, there is an opportunity here to send a strong statement on the value of supporters beyond money" (London DAILY MAIL, 3/17).

National Rugby League side Penrith Panthers is investigating claims that South Sydney's Greg Inglis was "racially abused by a member of the crowd in the Panthers' 18-14 NRL win over the Rabbitohs on Saturday." Inglis was booed from Panthers Stadium when he left the field "following a head knock on Saturday, and remained on the Rabbitohs' bench after he was ruled out for the rest of the match." Inglis reportedly "heard racial abuse at some point and notified Rabbitohs officials after the match" (AAP, 3/18).
