Football Notes: Sepp Blatter Endorses Morocco's World Cup Bid

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter endorsed Morocco's bid to host the 2026 World Cup. Blatter said via his Twitter account that "Morocco would be the logical host! And it is time for Africa again!" (ESPN.com, 2/22).

League Championship side Leeds United delayed the launch of a new club crest until its centenary year in '19-20. The club unveiled a new badge in January to start being worn next season, but the design was mocked as "awful," "shocking" and "horrendous" by fans. More than 77,000 people signed a petition asking Owner Andrea Radrizzani to stop the launch of the original design (BBC, 2/22).

Russian hooligan wanted for the “attempted homicide” of an England fan at Euro 2016 was arrested on Wednesday "following a continent-wide manhunt." The unnamed 31-year-old is suspected of attacking Andrew Bache, who was left paralyzed on the left side of his body "during a rampage" ahead of England and Russia’s Euro 2016 opener in Marseille (London TELEGRAPH, 2/22).

Iraq is "hoping to convince FIFA to lift a decades-long ban" on hosting int'l matches after overhauling its stadiums and security. Iraq has not played full internationals on home turf "for almost three decades" (ALARABY, 2/22).

A Panama-based company on Wednesday pleaded guilty to bribing a Costa Rican football official and was "ordered to pay a fine and restitution" totaling $1.4M, the latest penalty imposed in the U.S. prosecution of corruption in int'l football. Mimo Int'l Exports & Imports Inc. entered its plea before U.S. District Judge Pamela Chen in Brooklyn (REUTERS, 2/21).
