Mercedes F1 Unveils New '18 Car; Exec Slams Halo

Mercedes Formula 1 unveiled the new car Lewis Hamilton will drive in his bid to defend his F1 title, according to Tom Cary of the London TELEGRAPH. The W09 was "officially revealed in a presentation at Silverstone race track." The design features the "now mandatory halo head protection device" -- but Mercedes Motorsport Dir Toto Wolff revealed his "disdain for the new safety technology." Wolff: "I'm not impressed with the whole thing and if you give me a chainsaw I would take it off. We need to look after driver safety but what we have implemented is aesthetically not appealing." He said of the car's overall design, "We've tried to stay true to our design philosophy and develop an already solid base. We hope we have kept the good character traits of the diva. We all like divas, but sometimes she was a bit difficult to understand and this is the area where we worked the most, trying to understand and preserve the speed in the car and find more driveability" (TELEGRAPH, 2/22). The AFP's Kieran Canning reported Hamilton was "less stinging in his criticism of the halo's new look." He said, "Honestly, I think the team have done a great job to integrate it and make it look as nice as it can look. ... There are parts of the lighter, more nimble cars I miss. It was easier to overtake. The heavier they are, they will always continue to get slower" (AFP, 2/22).
