Celtic-Zenit St. Petersburg Game Played Indoors In Balmy Conditions

Scottish Premiership side Celtic fans who "jetted to snow-hit Russia" for the club's Europa League match against Zenit St. Petersburg were basking in "balmy" 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) heat during Thursday's match, according to Rebecca Gray of the SCOTTISH SUN. Zenit execs shut the Krestovsky Stadium roof to "guard against a blizzard." The stadium’s "retractable roof and state of the art heating system" will reportedly keep the temperature between 15C (59F) and 20C. One fan said, "We'll need to have shorts and t-shirts on under our winter gear" (SCOTTISH SUN, 2/21). In Glasgow, John McGarry reported with an estimated price tag of £1.1B ($1.5B), the Krestovsky Stadium "is believed to be the most expensive football stadium on the planet." Situated on an island "on the outskirts of the city, at night the spectacular structure lends the impression" that it landed from outer space. The upper levels of its "unbroken steep stands are assuredly not for those prone to bouts of vertigo." The stadium is due to host seven World Cup matches this summer after being completed last April, "eight years behind schedule" (Scottish DAILY MAIL, 2/21).
