Rio 2016 Falling Short Of Legacy Plans, IOC Says

Post-Games plans for Rio 2016's aquatics center have not materialized.GETTY IMAGES

Some venues from Rio 2016 "are decaying as Brazil has so far fallen short of its own legacy plans for sports facilities," the IOC said on Sunday, according to Karolos Grohmann of REUTERS. In a "surprisingly frank comment," Olympic Games Exec Dir Christophe Dubi admitted plans for the post-Games use for several venues, including the aquatics center in the Olympic park, "had largely remained on paper." Dubi said, "A very well planned legacy that did not materialize in full." He added that while the city "had benefited from the post-Games use of what he said was an improved transportation and telecommunication systems, some sports venues were standing idle." Dubi said of the temporary structures that were supposed to be moved away from the park in Barra de Tijuca after the competition, "Dismantle the venues. It has not happened because of the political landscape, because of the social and economic situation" (REUTERS, 2/18).
