Matildas striker SAM KERR "missed the cut" for the FIFA Best Women's Player award after the shortlist was revealed at a ceremony in London. The 24-year-old was overlooked in favor of American midfielder CARLI LLOYD, Venezuelan teenager DEYNA CASTELLANOS and LIEKE MARTENS, who helped the Netherlands win the Euro 2017 title. On the men's front, "it was a case of the usual suspects" with CRISTIANO RONALDO, LIONEL MESSI and NEYMAR nominated as finalists (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 9/24). ... Four-time major winner RORY MCILROY believes the PGA Tour will eventually merge with the European Tour as it is "counter-productive" for them to compete against each other. The Northern Irishman said that "one way of achieving a unified circuit would be if the U.S.-based circuit bought the European Tour and continued to run its events." McIlroy: "The World Tour -- it's going to happen one day and I think it has to" (REUTERS, 9/22). ... Ironman announced four-time world champion CHRISSIE WELLINGTON will be inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame. The ceremony will be held on Oct. 11 during race week at the 2017 Ironman World Championship triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i (Ironman).
