Montrose Golf Links May Launch £5M Crowdfunding Campaign To Save Course

A crowdfunding campaign "may be launched" to raise £5M ($6.5M) to "save a historic golf course" that is losing more than 2m a year to the sea, according to John Jeffay of the LONDON TIMES. The Montrose Golf Links in Angus, Scotland, -- reputed to be the fifth-oldest in the world -- "already had to move three of its holes." Coastal erosion is "threatening to destroy part of the course," which was created 455 years ago but shaped as it is now mainly in the 19th century. Managers of the course are "looking at funding options to install rock armour" costing £5M by three of its seaside holes. A failure to find a solution would mean a "massive realignment exercise" inland, "amalgamating the championship and Broomfield courses into one" (LONDON TIMES, 7/13).
