ARAF Says Russian Athletes May Participate Under Neutral Flag At European Championships
All-Russia Athletics Federation President Dmitry Shlyakhtin said that the ARAF will "propose its athletes to participate in the European Athletics Championship next March in Belgrade under a neutral flag and based on individual applications," according to TASS. He said, "We will definitely propose our athletes to take part in the European Winter Championship as independent track and fielders. The participation of an athlete in the international tournament will first of all depend on his or her personal decision." According to Shlyakhtin, the ARAF is "waiting for the relevant documents" from the IAAF. Rune Andersen, the head of the IAAF Taskforce group in charge of the Russian membership’s reinstatement in the organization, said earlier this month that beginning next spring Russian athletes would "have an opportunity of submitting personal applications for international tournaments" (TASS, 12/5).
