Discovery Partners With RTÉ To Secure Free-To-Air Rights For 2018, 2020 Games
Discovery Communications reached an agreement with RTÉ Sport to secure the exclusive free-to-air TV and multi-platform broadcast rights for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Under the agreement and continuing the public broadcaster's history of Olympic Games coverage, RTÉ will sublicense the exclusive free-to-air broadcast rights from Discovery Communications, including the linear TV channel and non-exclusive radio rights. RTÉ's PyeongChang 2018 coverage will offer more free-to-air access than during the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, with live coverage of the Opening and Closing ceremonies and a daily highlights packages to be broadcast on RTÉ 2, via digital simulcast, and catch-up TV services. Eurosport will broadcast comprehensive live coverage of PyeongChang 2018 across two channels, offering expanded coverage to Irish sports fans compared to Sochi 2014.
IN CROATIA: Discovery also announced a new TV and multi-platform broadcast agreement for the Olympic Games with Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT), the public broadcaster in Croatia. This deal will make the 2018 and 2020 Olympic Games available to Croatian viewers on HRT channels as well as on Eurosport. As part of the agreement, HRT will sub-license from Discovery Communications free-to-air audio visual and radio rights, for the 2018 and 2020 Olympic Games. Additionally, HRT's sublicensing package includes digital rights to the content it broadcasts on its linear TV channel.
THE DETAILS: Discovery also revealed details of its production program in Norway and Sweden for PyeongChang 2018. In Sweden, Discovery will broadcast a broad range of events on its free-to-air channel Kanal 5, together with Eurosport 1 and 2. The Olympic Games will be broadcast in Norway across free-to-air channels TV Norge, in addition to Eurosport and Eurosport Norge (Discovery).
