Guadeloupe Regional President Confirms Island Will Host France, Canada Davis Cup Tie

Guadeloupe regional President Ary Chalus on Monday confirmed that “his island will host the first stage of the Davis Cup between France and Canada,” according to L’ÉQUIPE. Chalus: “I’m announcing that the region has reached a new agreement and will benefit from assistance from the State, which determines the organization of this event in Guadeloupe.” Considering the “budgetary situation of the community would not allow” an amount above the €1M ($1.1M) initially discussed, Chalus said that “a new agreement has been reached.” Former President Victorien Lurel had been accused of acting in “lightness” and acting “without awareness to the economic realities.” Chalus said, “Irresponsibility and casualness are not and will never be part of our method of governance” (L’ÉQUIPE, 12/28).
