Borussia Dortmund Welcomes Refugees As Part Of National Initiative

Football fans in Germany have been "getting to grips with the European refugee crisis in the best way possible this weekend" -- by welcoming asylum seekers at their grounds, according to Tom Edwards of the London TELEGRAPH. Crowds at various different clubs "displayed large banners" with the message "Refugees Welcome" during their Bundesliga fixtures -- and Borussia Dortmund "even invited 220 of them along to watch a match." The club's official Twitter account posted a picture of the new supporters watching Thursday's Europa League tie against Norwegian side Odds Ballklubb. The invite was part of the "angekommen in Dortmund" scheme -- literally meaning "arrived in Dortmund" -- which is part of a "wider national initiative to help refugees settle in." All of the banners around the grounds over the weekend "were coordinated efforts as part of the same mass welcome" (TELEGRAPH, 8/31).
