Board Of Control For Cricket In India Addresses Conflict Of Interest Issue

Seeking to "finally address the problematic issue of conflict of interest in Indian cricket," the Board of Control for Cricket in India "recently wrote to all cricket associations to sign an undertaking on the matter," according to THE INDIAN EXPRESS. Holding the associations to the undertaking, however, "may be easier said than done," with several retired int'l cricketers "likely to find it tough to continue in their BCCI posts." If Roger Binny's three-year stint as national selector may end -- his son Stuart was given a Test cap under him -- "other past stalwarts such as Anil Kumble, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and V V S Laxman have lucrative contracts" with Indian Premier League franchises, or have connections with firms managing players, etc., that "clash with their BCCI duties." A look at the BCCI members "who may run foul of the undertaking:"

  • Anil Kumble: chair, BCCI's technical committee, "he is Mentor, Mumbai Indians, and co-founder of Tenvic, a company in the business of sports training and consulting."
  • Ravi Shastri: director, Indian cricket team, and contracted to the BCCI as commentator. Last commentary assignment was the ongoing Ashes. He is member, IPL governing council.
  • Sunil Gavaskar: contracted to the BCCI as commentator. He runs Professional Management Group, a sports marketing agency that has signed on a number of cricketers, including Mumbai batsman Sarfaraz Khan.
  • Sachin Tendulkar: member, BCCI’s cricket advisory committee, he is mentor, Mumbai Indians.
  • Sanjay Bangar: coach, Indian cricket team, he also coaches Kings XI Punjab.
Former Indian cricketer Brijesh Patel said an exception "should be made for cricketers." He said, "The Supreme Court said that cricketers, former and present, could be involved in the game in a professional capacity. So there should be different rules for them." The "administrators too are confused on the matter." Some are of the view that cricketers "should be treated on a par with administrators and not allowed to hold mutually conflicting roles" while others believe cricketers should be excused if "they are deemed to be contributing to development of the game in any form" (THE INDIAN EXPRESS, 8/3). The PTI reported there was speculation that current and former players "will also be asked to sign the undertakings," just like the BCCI members who have been asked to "declare that they do not have 'conflict of interest' while holding functionary posts in their respective cricket associations." But, a source in the BCCI said that there was "no such move to immediately ask the current and former players to make this declaration." A member of the BCCI Working Group said, "No players have yet been sent any 'No Conflict of Interest' undertaking yet. This is right now only mailed for presidents and secretaries of the state associations" (PTI, 8/3). ZEE NEWS reported the BCCI is expected to put in place a Player Agent Accreditation System to ensure that those handling the cricketers' commercial interests "are bound by a code of conduct." Further details regarding the Code of Ethics and Agent Agreement "will be discussed in the next working committee meeting of the BCCI" (ZEE NEWS, 8/3).

BAN LIFTED: The PTI reported the Mumbai Cricket Association has lifted the ban on Kolkata Knight Riders Owner Shah Rukh Khan from entering Wankhede Stadium, "but will not challenge a life ban on tainted player Ankeet Chavan." MCA VP Ashish Shelar said, "Action had been taken against him when required and we felt it was not good to take it any further. The whole managing committee consented on it. We felt it would not look good to bar somebody like this" (PTI, 8/2). NDTV SPORTS reported the BCCI's working group will "discuss ways to implement the RM Lodha Panel order on Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals." The group "is also expected to meet IPL team owners to find a solution to the crisis that started with the 2013 betting and fixing scandal" (NDTV SPORTS, 8/3).
