Elche President Juan Anguix Resigns With Team On Verge Of Second Relegation

Spanish football club Elche President Juan Anguix resigned on Wednesday, "48 hours before the deadline for the club to pay its debt" to the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) and avoid relegation to the third tier, according to M.H. Marcos of AS. The club has already been relegated from La Liga to the second division. His resignation comes three months and one day after he was appointed president. To avoid relegation to the third tier, the club must collect €3M ($3.3M) by 11:59pm local time Thursday (AS, 7/30). The EFE reported Spanish Football League (LFP) President Javier Tebas said that Anguix "has been playing with the fan base," and that without him, the club "would still be" in La Liga. Tebas: "If you look at the history of Juan Anguix at the front of the club it is a series of excuses about things that do not go through others, that other people are to blame. Finally he has shown what one could see coming, that there was no economic capacity. I have a feeling that if someone other than him arrived at Elche, Elche would be in La Liga" (EFE, 7/30).
