FIGC President Tavecchio Says Only Five Serie A Clubs Are Economically Stable

Italian FA (FIGC) President Carlo Tavecchio warned that "only five clubs" in Serie A are "economically sound and sets out his vision for the future," according to FOOTBALL ITALIA. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tavecchio "spoke of new financial controls he was looking to implement" following Parma's bankruptcy. He said, "This year we've read all the balance sheets and there are clubs in difficulty even in big cities. We've warned them that from next season certain parameters will have to be respected or else they are out. If this rule was operational already this summer, only five clubs would be registered for next season's Serie A championship." Tavecchio also said that he was "hoping for a complete restructuring of the Italian league system, which he believes to be over-inflated." He added, "The professional world needs to be revisited, it's useless to have three leagues when two is enough -- an elite league and another that unifies Serie B and Lega Pro, the latter with a clear mission to value youngsters" (FOOTBALL ITALIA, 7/6).
