Football Notes: Boca Juniors Expels Six Involved In Attack On River Plate Players

Six members of Argentine first division Boca Juniors were expelled from the club "for suspected involvement during incidents on May 14," when Boca supporters "apparently cut an opening" in a tunnel put up to protect River Plate players as they entered the field and "filled it with pepper spray or mace to spray at their opponents." The measure, "which includes the suspension for one year of two other members, was voted on during an assembly on Monday" (AFP, 6/30). ... Argentina Federal Administration of Public Revenue (AFIP) Dir Ricardo Echegaray said on Monday that his organization will "embargo clubs with tax debts." He requested during a meeting with Argentine FA President Luis Segura a Financial Fair Play plan, "through which clubs have to demonstrate that they do not have pending debts." Echegaray: "In the case of not regulating said debt, we see ourselves obligated to communicate the existence of this debt with the different sponsors and start embargoes on payments from those sponsors" (EFE, 6/29). ... Paraguay football coach Ramón Díaz said that "he already owes his squad two pickup trucks, and will owe them a third if they upset Argentina" in their Copa América semifinal. Díaz: "Did I promise the squad something? Ask the players, they’ve already won two." Striker Édgar Benítez later confirmed, "We’ve already won two pickups off him and we’re going for the third" (REUTERS, 6/30). ... Germany coach Silvia Neid has "slammed FIFA's decision to make rival teams share the same hotel on the eve of a match" as her side prepared for Tuesday's semifinal against the U.S. at the Women's World Cup. U.S. counterpart Jill Ellis "backed her up." Neid said, "Two teams that are supposed to play against each other shouldn't be sharing the same hotel." Neid said that the arrangement "does not happen at the men's tournament" (AFP, 6/30).
