Telefónica Presents Three-Year, $1.5B Offer To LFP For Int'l TV Rights

Telefónica on Monday presented to the Spanish Football League (LFP) an offer of €1.35B ($1.52B) for the int'l TV rights for the next three seasons, according to Javier G. Matallanas of AS. The offer is for €450M ($506M) per year, "not counting in the first season the rights of Barcelona, Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo and Espanyol, whose rights belong to Telefónica." With this offer, the rights could be sold worldwide, "unlike the agreement reached" between LFP President Javier Tebas and Mediapro for the exploitation of the int'l rights over the next five years, as that deal "does not include the four Telefónica clubs." Although it has "presented a firm offer," Telefónica "remains bothered by how La Liga reached the deal with Mediapro, of which it had no knowledge." Telefónica sources "did not rule out legal action for that 'supposed auction'" (AS, 6/29).
