Organizers Of FIS World Cup In Germany Struggle To Cover Increased Costs

Organizers of the World Cup ski event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany "have experienced difficulties to cover increased costs," according to Holger Rehm of SPONSORs. A main reason is the recent decision of the Int'l Ski Federation (FIS) to increase prize money by 20%. For the organizers of the event in Garmisch, the increase means additional costs of €140,000 ($157,000). Garmisch organizing committee member Peter Fischer said that he barely sees any chance to come up with the money. Fischer wants together with other World Cup race organizers to write a letter to FIS and think about a solution with the German Ski Federation (DSV). The organization of last year’s races in Garmisch -- two women's and two men's events -- cost nearly €2M. The municipality contributes around €500,000 for infrastructure and snow making. Another sum of around €1.4M comes from the organizing committee and the DSV -- in particular through sponsorships. Due to the fact that sponsorship income for the women's races is lower, organizers are reportedly considering returning the hosting rights for the women's races (SPONSORs, 6/16).
