Before a "last-gasp approach for funding," Hong Kong Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs Jonathan McKinley said that the Legislative Council has all the information needed to make an "informed decision on the application" for HK$62.7M ($8M) for pre-construction work on Hong Kong's Kai Tak Sports Hub, according to Alvin Sallay of the SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST. He warned that a "failure to take a decision on Wednesday would lead to further delays on the completion of the project" -- now hoped to be finished by '21 -- and the cost "ballooning" from the estimated HK$25B ($3.2B). McKinley: "We feel they have enough information to be able to make a decision at the PWSC meeting on Wednesday. We need this funding so that we can draw up the detailed technical specifications and estimated budget for the project, for future consideration by Legco." He said that "any more delays would put inflationary pressure on the cost of the project featuring three major sporting facilities -- a 50,000-seater stadium with a retractable roof, a multi-purpose ground for 5,000 spectators and an indoor arena for 4,000 fans." The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union, one of the main users of the stadium once it is built, called for a "quick resolution." HKRFU CEO Vern Reid said, "It is important that the funds for the scoping of the new stadium are released as soon as possible as delays here will, by definition, put back the delivery of the new stadium" (SCMP, 5/4).
