Event Notes: Trondheim, Planica Bid To Host 2021 FIS World Nordic Ski Championships

Trondheim, Norway and Planica, Slovenia "have submitted their application documents to host the 2021 FIS World Nordic Ski Championships." The two cities join Oberstdorf, Germany "as host candidates" (SID, 5/4). ... The Euroleague Basketball World Tour will take a major step in the fall, when two Euroleague teams will meet in North America for the first time. Both Euro Classic games will be played between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Armani Milan, the first on Oct. 1 at the United Center in Chicago. On Oct. 4, the teams will play in N.Y. at Madison Square Garden (Euroleague). ... A-League CEO Damien de Bohun said that "ticket sales for the Melbourne derby semifinal between Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory will top 20,000" by the end of Monday. More than 45,000 are expected to attend Friday night's match at Etihad Stadium (AAP, 5/4).

IN BRAZIL: Some stadiums had "an afternoon to forget" on Sunday during the finals of two Brasileiro football state championships. At Beiro-Rio stadium, Brasileiro side Grêmio fans "broke chairs and threw them at" Internacional fans. Riots only ended after military police "used tear gas bombs." Fortaleza also saw "tear gas bombs launched by Military Police" (UOL, 5/3). ... Rio de Janeiro's Campeonato Carioca final had a peaceful climate throughout the bleachers. Brazilian Sports Minister George Hilton's proposed "Shout for Peace" moved forward effectively. Maracanã stadium's LED screen showed pictures of fans from Brasileiro sides Vasco and Botafogo together with the hashtag #GritoDePaz (#ShoutForPeace) (Ministério do Esporte).
